International Whale Shark Day August 30, 2010

International Whale Shark Day Cancun Mexico

(Dive Travel Business News - August 11, 2010) -- International Whale Shark Day is August 30, 2010. The northern tip of the Yucatan is known for it's annual whale shark migration near Isla Holbox or Holbox Island. The migration starts mid-June until September where aggregations of up to 400 giant fish have been observed

The congregation of so many animals is unusual. Holbox Island is unique in that it is located where the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico join. There are upwellings of nutrient rich water that feed the food chain that contains everything from the tiniest plankton to schools of fish, sea birds, flamingos and ibis and of course, the giant yet vulnerable whale shark. It is truly a special place.

Holbox Island is only the second instance where marine scientists have discovered whale sharks are feeding on not just plankton but also fish eggs that are suspended in the upwellings. Marine scientists from a variety of organizations have been working with Mexican scientists for more than seven years on studying, tagging and tracking the world's largest fish that can grow to 10 metres in length. read more »

Sinking of USS Kittiwake postponed in Cayman

USS Kittiwake Sinking Postponed in Grand Cayman

(Dive Travel Business News - July 21, 2010) -- The Cayman Islands Tourism Association (CITA) regrets to inform the public of an urgent situation that has arisen which will cause the USS Kittiwake sinking events scheduled to take place between July 24th - 27th, 2010, to be postponed.

The CITA has done everything in their power to execute the necessary preparations to have the ship towed, but unfortunately, due to circumstances out of their control, the ship is unable to be towed from the US to Grand Cayman by the necessary date. This delay means that the Official Sinking dates will be moved further out. Based on all of the factors involved, the sinking will take place post hurricane season. The exact dates will be announced as soon as possible.

The CITA is taking comprehensive measures to mitigate the effects of this inconvenience on media, visiting journalists, visitors, guests and ex-crew members who all planned to attend and witness the sinking of the ex-USS Kittiwake in the Cayman Islands.  read more »

Caribbean Marketplace sees little change in 2010

CHTA Marketplace 2010

(DiveTravelBusinessNews.com - January 19, 2010) -- The tourism outlook for 2010 in the Caribbean region anticipates an uphill struggle and continued challenges for hoteliers, operators and destinations as the economic effects of the global recession continue to erode demand.

The mood at the annual Caribbean Marketplace was sober and realistic. Yet, attendance figures, the third-largest in recent years, suggested that buyers and suppliers are hellbent on salvaging business lost in 2009 and bolstering what’s on the books thus far in 2010 and beyond with creative deals and incentives.

Alec Sanguinetti, director general and CEO of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association, which hosted Marketplace, put it bluntly: "From the tourist industry point of view, we see no reason that 2010 will be any better than 2009." Read more of Gay Nagle Myers story here at Travel Weekly.
