Western Sumatra Quakes Produce Little Damage in Indonesia.

(Dive Travel Business News - April 11, 2012) -- Communities and resorts located along the Indian Ocean Rim breathed a collective sigh of relief earlier on April 11 when tsunami alerts were called off after a pair of deep-sea earthquakes off the coast of Indonesia. Those earthquakes, which had magnitudes 8.6 and 8.2, respectively, produced only scattered small tsunamis, according to AccuWeather.com.

The earthquakes were centered off the northern end of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, about 120 miles from the epicenter of the 9.1 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that killed some 230,000 people in the region, mostly in Sumatra, in 2004. When the quakes hit this time, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre was activated and there were reports of panicked crowds in the region moving to higher ground. Those fears also were fueled by the March 2011 Japan quake, tsunami and nuclear catastrophe. read more »

New Packages Could Open U.S. Travel to Cuba

New Two-Destination Packages Could Open U.S. Travel to Cuba

(Dive Travel Business News - May 25, 2011) -- A joint project to develop tourism links between Cuba and Mexico could open the U.S. tour market to the Caribbean islands in the form of vacation packages that combine Mexico and Cuba.

The decision by Cuba and Mexico to work together to promote vacations that combine both countries was unveiled at Cuba’s recent 31st International Tourism Fair in Cuba (FITCUBA 2011). FITCUBA is Cuba’s annual international trade event, attracting travel agents and tour operators from 40 countries, including Western Europe and Canada – but not the U.S.

Cuba is the Caribbean’s third most popular destination, according to Cuba’s tourism ministry, and that’s without benefit of travel from the destination’s number one travel market – the U.S. The U.S. market accounts for more than half of the Caribbean’s annual vacation visitors.

At least one American proponent of opening U.S. travel to Cuba sees the joint promotion with Mexico as a foot in the door for American travelers. read more »

(Dive Travel Business News - March 4, 2011) -- Often heralded as the top dive destination in the Caribbean, the Cayman Islands has sunk the ex-USS Kittiwake off the north end of Grand Cayman’s Seven Mile Beach creating another dive site.  The USS Kittiwake, a decommissioned 1945-vintage submarine rescue ship, was scuttled on Wed Jan 5, 2011 in the Cayman Islands to create an artificial reef that will attract both fish and tourists.

The former WWII US Navy ship was thoroughly prepared, with the removal of any hazard materials before it was towed from the US to Grand Cayman.  The former submarine carrier will become an important artificial reef that provides a haven for local marine life as well as a key dive and snorkel site. Cancun's Natural Wonders include Crocodiles

Crocs in Cancun Lagoon

(Dive Travel Business News - Nov 3, 2010) -- The Mexican Government is advising Tourists to be careful when visiting lagoons in and around the popular tourist resort of Cancun. The lagoons in the area, including the lagoon in Cancun's hotel zone, are a natural habitat for crocodiles. Cancun's crocodiles (principally American crocodiles, Crocodylus acutus) are a non-aggressive species that feed on fish and other small wildlife. Cancun's sprawling 5000 hectare Nicupté lagoon is home to approximately 25 of the species -- though most of them live away from populated areas.

Recently, a US tourist was attacked by a crocodile while attempting to answer the call of nature in Cancun. According to Mexican police, 20-year-old Andrew Dales of Dallas confessed that he had been on a mission to relieve himself at the edge of the local lagoon when a crocodile suddenly snapped at him. He suffered “multiple bite wounds” to his leg and neck and was also left with a head injury after the reptile knocked him to the ground, a police spokesman said.

Lagoons in the area are dotted with crocodile warning signs. read more »

End of Ban on US Travel to Cuba Near?

Act to lift US Ban on Travel to Cuba over first hurdle

(Dive Travel Business News - June 30, 2010) -- In a vote of 25 to 20, the U.S. House Agriculture Committee approved the Travel Restriction Reform and Export Enhancement Act.  This is the first hurdle towards lifting the ban on US travel to Cuba, in a measure that also eases restrictions on the sale of American commodities there.  The Travel Restriction Reform and Export Enhancement Act must still get through another House committee and pass the full House. Then the Senate would have to pass its own version of the bill before it could be signed by the president.

Before the final vote, the Agriculture Committee rejected several amendments that would have eliminated the travel ban reversal or delayed its enactment. Opponents of the bill argue that while export restrictions should be eased, lifting the travel ban would benefit only the Communist government led by Fidel and Raúl Castro. read more »

kangaroo

(Sydney Morning Herald - May 29, 2009) -- The travel industry has been warned there will be no grace period for changes to the Trade Practices Act to outlaw component pricing, by which a supplier advertises a price that doesn't include additional taxes and charges.

The changes were enacted last week but had been in the pipeline for three years, since they were first proposed by the previous federal government.

Two industries travel and automobiles were singled out as the biggest users of component pricing in Australia, even though three of the four domestic airlines have voluntarily observed a pricing-transparency code for most of the past three years.

Now, the agency that will enforce the new legislative changes, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, says no mercy will be shown to lawbreakers.

"It's not as if it has crept up on people without notice, without warning," says ACCC chairman Graeme Samuel. read more »

Travelers take advantage of deals in Mexico

(Dive Travel Business News - May 29, 2009) -- Diana Flores eases into an empty swinging poolside daybed, staring contentedly at the turquoise Caribbean Sea. "I feel like I'm in a Corona commercial," the Los Angeles resident says, beckoning a waiter.

Flores, 52, and her husband had priced out nearby Laguna Beach and Palm Springs for the long Memorial Day weekend. But nothing beat the last-minute deals they found in a Mexico reeling from the economic affects of the H1N1 virus. So just days after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had lifted its advisory against non-essential travel south of the border, Flores booked her four-night trip to Le Meridien Cancun Resort & Spa.

"A lot of people were surprised," says Flores, who works with her husband in a family-owned automotive business. "When it comes to things like (the swine flu), I'm not frightened. I just wanted the fresh air." read more »

Maldives Plans New Homeland

(Dive Travel Business News - November 21, 2008) -- The Maldives will begin to divert a portion of the country's billion-dollar annual tourist revenue into buying a new homeland - as an insurance policy against climate change that threatens to turn the 300,000 islanders into environmental refugees, the country's first democratically elected president has told the UK's Guardian.

Mohamed Nasheed, who took power last week in the island's capital, Male, said the chain of 1,200 island and coral atolls dotted 500 miles from the tip of India is likely to disappear under the waves if the current pace of climate change continues to raise sea levels.

The UN forecasts that the seas are likely to rise by up to 59cm by 2100, due to global warming. Most parts of the Maldives are just 1.5m above water. The president said even a "small rise" in sea levels would inundate large parts of the archipelago.  read more »
