New US Travel Law in Effect - Government Taxes & Fees must be included in Ticket Price

(Dive Travel Business News - December 20, 2011) -- U.S. Airline passengers frustrated by inconsistencies in how carriers advertise their fares will be getting some relief next month when a new federal rule kicks in requiring that all government taxes and fees be included in the stated price.

The new rule, part of the second phase of a package of federal airline passenger protections enacted this year, is set to take effect Jan. 24.  When the law comes into effect, customers searching online for the best fare will no longer have to click through to find footnotes or fine print that boosts the final price. Airlines will still be allowed to list optional charges separately, such as baggage, seat assignment and reservation change fees.

Additional measures slated to take effect next month include:

A requirement that airlines disclose baggage fees at the time of booking. Airlines already must post baggage fees on their websites. But passengers now will automatically see the fees when they buy a ticket online. read more »

Young Affluent Travelers Don't See Luxury Like Boomers

Millennial Luxury Travelers not the fly and flop generation.

(Dive Travel Business News - January 3, 2012) -- A new generation of travel buyers is embracing definitions of luxury that pose significant challenges to how luxury has been viewed and presented.  But simply knowing the values and preferences of this new generation of high-end traveler is not making it easy to actually accommodate them.

Suppliers and buyers alike are beginning to realize that travelers younger than the 45- to 55-year-olds who make up the bulk of the market bring with them a different set of standards than their elders. Such travelers are concerned less with opulence and pampering and more with value, authenticity and truly local experiences. They know much more about travel, the destination and what they want from the experience.

For younger, wealthier travelers it's not about ‘fly and flop.’ It’s about ‘find and seek.’ They are looking for one-of-a-kind, nature-based experiences that tried and true luxury brands don't normally accomodate a more modern, less traditional sense of luxury. They are less awed by legacy luxury brands like Astoria, Fairmont and Four Seasons. read more »

AA Files for Bankruptcy

(Dive Travel Business - December 1, 2011) --  With rising fuel costs, staggering labor costs, and an uncertain economy, American Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection on Tuesday Nov 29, 2011. AMR, the parent company of American, moved to reorganize the struggling operation and reassure passengers that the filing would not affect regular operations.  Booked flights are secure, as American said it would operate its regular schedule and honor tickets and reservations.

American Airlines passengers should not expect any near-term changes, and may even see better fares if American chooses to cut prices to keep planes full and nervous passengers buying tickets for a typically slow January and February sales period. read more »

Chaos erupts during Egypt's peak tourism season

(Dive Travel Business News - January 31, 2011) -- In the midst of Egypt’s peak tourist season, political unrest with demonstrations in Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan and Suez are clearly upsetting tourism in that country.  The situation is in flux and news media reports have yet to comment on the impact on travelers to Egypt. As of this writing, the Egyptian Tourism Authority’s website makes no reference to the country's current problems.

The U.S. State Department, British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs are among the Foreign Ministries that have issued travel warnings urging citizens to postpone non-essential travel to Egypt.  However, with the cancelation of flights to Cairo and other cities by major airlines like Delta, Lufthansa  and Air Berlin, the Government imposed curfew, the absence of law enforcement and the disruption in the communication networks, foreign travelers in Egypt are faced with questions about their safety.  read more »
