World's Largest Aquarium Springs a Leak

(Dive Travel Business News - Februay 26, 2010) -- Jokes about cheap shark steaks quickly spread across the Internet in the wake of a leak in the world's largest aquarium on Feb 25, 2010. The 2.5 million gallon Dubai Aquarium is home to more than 33,000 fish including 400 sharks and stingrays.

According to the UK's Daily Telegraph, visitors fled as water shot out from a cracked seam in the glass of a viewing panel at the Aquarium.   As the resulting flooding spread, scores of shoppers hitched up their pant legs and skirts to flee the building. Water was seen spreading across the mall concourse and flowing down towards the car parking area and basement. Eventually workers outside the aquarium and 6 divers inside the tank were able to stem the flow and the Aquarium was reopened to the public later in the evening.

The Aquarium is considered one of the showpieces of the Dubai Mall - a must do travel destination for serious International Shoppers.  It is also part of the same development as the 160-storey Burj Khalifa - the world's tallest tower. The tower, opened to the public in January 2010, has suffered it's own problems and was recently closed. Earlier this month, the elevator taking visitors to the tower's viewing platform came to a sudden halt with a loud bang, trapping those inside for more than 45 minutes.  Repairs for those technical problems have yet to be completed.
