New Underwater Treasure Hunt Game Introduced by DEMA
(Dive Travel Business News - May 29, 2011) -- The Diving Equipment & Marketing Association (DEMA) recently released a new in-water game called “DiveCaching.” DiveCaching is an underwater game for snorkelers and certified divers that is designed to keep divers active locally while promoting more diving.
DiveCaching combines basic diving skills with underwater navigation and underwater search techniques to find a hidden DiveCache - a hidden underwater container, or "cache" filled with "goodies." DiveCaches can be hidden in almost any underwater environment, and the visibility, temperature and other diving conditions are part of the challenge of hiding and finding a cache.
DEMA launched the activity to the professional diving community in early May, giving dive centers a “heads-up” to get involved with hiding caches for their local dive sites. DEMA has sent several BeADiver “trackable” tags to DEMA member retail stores to help them start local diving games for their customers.
DiveCaching is essentially an underwater “treasure” hunt that combines certified scuba diving skills or snorkeling skills with some high tech equipment and simple underwater search techniques, while looking for a hidden “cache” of goodies. Divers hide a “treasure” or cache container underwater and out of sight of non-caching divers or swimmers; They then post the location of the hidden cache online, and other divers search for it. Other divers search www.geocaching.com for DiveCache listings near their dive site and actually dive to locate the cache.
When the cache is found, the finder logs their visit to the cache online, and puts the cache back where they found it. The finder may also choose to photograph the cache, deposit an additional treasure in the container or simply return it to its original location. After returning to the surface, the finders log their visit on www.geocaching.com, sharing their adventure with other divers around the world.
The cache itself is usually composed of a container holding a log book or log sheet, a writing instrument, and various items that might be of interest to the dive cacher, such as collectible coins, lapel pins, key chains, beads, money, stones, or other treasures. These items, known as SWAG (Stuff We All Get) can include handmade items, stuff from the dollar store and anything else the DiveCacher can imagine. Items don’t need to be expensive but should be a reflection of the cacher’s personality.
Using Facebook as the primary media platform for the dive caching launch, DEMA has created a series of short (two minute) videos that describe the various aspects of DiveCaching, all aimed at currently certified divers and snorkelers in an effort to get them back into diving as the traditional but “unofficial” dive season opens at the end of this month.
DEMA, the Diving Equipment & Marketing Association, is an international organization dedicated to the promotion and growth of the recreational scuba diving and snorkeling industry. For more information visit DiveCaching, DEMA, Facebook and Twitter.
