(DiveTravelBusinessNews - 15 Nov 2009) -- Fans of Sea Hunt will want to check out Nelson's Restaurant at the Terranea Resort in southern California's Palos Verdes peninsula. Nelson's is a tribute to Mike Nelson, the character played by Lloyd Bridges in the famed Sea Hunt television series. Much of the hit program was filmed in a long-gone huge aquarium on the resort's site where the Marineland amusement park once stood. Nelson’s pays homage to Mr. Bridge’s lifetime efforts to protect the environment and is part of Terranea Resort’s conscious efforts to protect the valuable resources of their unique oceanside location.

Bridge's character Mike Nelson, an adventurous ex-Navy frogman turned freelance diver, captured the imaginations of young and old alike and while the show ran from 1958-1961 producing 155 episodes, the popularity of its syndicated re-runs continued well into the sixties, then on to cable TV and DVD boxed sets.

Mr. Bridges was a pioneer in environmental awareness and his Sea Hunt character was instrumental in bringing the message to the world that the oceans are one of our most vital resources which we should do all we can to preserve. Ahead of his time, the actor ended each episode of Sea Hunt with a personal plea to protect the world’s oceans.

With a view to the Point Vicente Lighthouse, Nelson's offers one of the most scenic California coastline locations which to enjoy a meal in a casual setting. Outside patrons can relax by outdoor fire pits and soak in the natural beauty of the Palos Verdes coastline.  Inside the upscale surf shack, black-and-white framed photos of the actor decked out in surfing gear grace the walls. Wherever possible, environmentally sensitive materials are used for the nautically-themed decor, including a bar counter top made of recycled wine bottles.

It’s been reported that Lloyd Bridges reluctantly decided to leave the show after only four seasons because the producers wanted to emphasize cops-and-robbers plots while Bridges wanted to focus more on environmental themes. Not a diver at the beginning of the series, Bridges quickly became very proficient.  Sea Hunt, along with The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau, shaped many lives, motivating more people into diving and igniting the dive and travel industries.
