(Dive Travel Business News - January 12, 2012) -- Wreck divers, shipwreck enthusiasts and marine history buffs will appreciate a Civil War shipwreck poster now available through Tech Diving Limited. From the estate of the late photographer and explorer Rod Farb, the limited edition USS Monitor poster was taken during the Farb Monitor Expeditions in the 1990's.  The photograph was chosen by National Geographic as the image that best illustrated the USS Monitor during that time.  The full color poster is printed on 10 point stock and measures 24x36 inches and is available for US$20.

On March 9, 1862, the Civil War battle of Hampton Roads between the ironclads USS Monitor and CSS Virginia (formerly the USS Merrimack) heralded the beginning of a new era in naval warfare. Though indecisive, the battle marked the change from wood and sail to iron and steam.

Today, the remains of the USS Monitor rest on the ocean floor off North Carolina's Outer Banks, where the ship sank in a storm on December 31, 1862. Discovered in 1973, the Monitor wreck site was designated the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary and is managed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The purpose of the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary is to preserve the historic record of this significant vessel and to interpret her role in shaping US naval history.

The Mariner's Museum in Virginia is the repository for all the Monitor artifacts, as well as a full replica of the USS Monitor . During the 1990's, the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, in collaboration with the Mariner's Museum and the US Navy, retrieved the ship's engine and turret from the USS Monitor for preservation.

The Monitor National Marine Sanctuary is located 16 miles south-southeast of the Cape Hatteras, North Carolina Lighthouse.Weather and sea surface conditions can be unpredictable at the Monitor.  Diving the USS Monitor is a challenging technical dive requiring significant diving experience. High seas and strong currents can make for very challenging dive conditions.

Because of its location and environment it is impossible for the majority of the public to visit the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary. Since the late 1980s civilians have provided significant survey and documentation services to the NOAA National Marine Sanctuary in exchange for the privilege of visiting this historic site. Private research diving permits are only available by approval through the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary.

Joel Silverstein and Capt. Kathy Weydig, principals at Tech Diving Limited, have been diving the USS Monitor since the 1990s, and ran Rod Farb's operations in 1997 during the Farb Monitor Expeditions. Tech Diving Limited was granted its first civilian permit from the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary in 2004 and has run multiple civilian research expeditions to the Monitor site.  Tech Diving Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Scuba Training and Technology Inc.
