A Coral Reef Designed for Valentine's Day
(Dive Travel Business News - Feb 14, 2012) -- The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system (and it's largest living structure ), comprising nearly 3,000 individual reefs and 900 islands off the eastern coast of Australia. One of these thousands of reefs is Heart Reef, so named for its shape. It is located in the Whitsunday Islands and must be viewed from the air as the area is protected and snorkelers and scuba divers are not allowed to enter.
Located in Hardy Reef, Heart Reef is a stunning composition of coral that has naturally formed into the shape of a heart. Many tour companies will combine a scenic helicopter or seaplane flight over Heart Reef with other breathtaking spots in the Whitsundays.
Heart Reef was discovered in 1975 by one of Air Whitsunday's pilots and is now an internationally-recognised attraction of the Whitsundays. Possibly the most photographed reef in the world, Heart Reef is featured on many postcards and brochures promoting the Whitsunday region and the Great Barrier Reef.
While flying over Heart Reef a lot of young lovers have used the overflight opportunity to propose marriage and declarations of love. If planning to “pop the question”, Dive Travelers are advised to let their pilot know their plans in order to provide some extra flight time over the famous icon.
Air Whitsunday offers a variety of day tours including its "Reef Adventure Tour". Departing daily, the 3-hour seaplane tour showcases the magnitude of the Great Barrier Reef from above, before landing and transferring to a private semi-submersible at Hardy Reef for two hours coral viewing and snorkelling. The Air Whitsunday seaplanes have large, unobstructed windows perfect for photography, and its vessels have an underwater viewing chamber, sun and shade decks and easy step access into the water. Groups are limited to a maximum of 22 people. Snorkelling assistance and tuition is provided. All ages and fitness levels are catered for. For more information visit Air Whitsunday.
