Airlines Off-setting Their Carbon Footprint

(December 30, 2007 - New York Times) –There’s nothing like the sight of a jumbo jet racing through the clouds and burning fossil fuels at breakneck speeds to make a green traveler cringe. In response, airlines have been busy setting up voluntary carbon-offsetting programs.

Last spring, Delta (www.delta.com) invited customers to get involved in reforestation efforts by making donations to the Conservation Fund at booking. And in December, Continental published a carbon offsetting calculator onwww.continental.com. There, travelers can view the carbon footprint of their flight, and make a contribution to the nonprofit group Sustainable Travel International, choosing one of four offsetting portfolios, ranging from reforestation efforts to renewable energy projects that adhere to the principles of the Kyoto Protocol.

Other airlines with similar programs include Air Canada, British Airlines and Cathay Pacific.
